Seymour Department of Public Works buys clam truck

The Seymour Department of Public Works plans to roll out its newest piece of equipment during Make Seymour Shine Week April 4 to 8.

The $200,000 clam truck was made possible through funding from the Jackson County Solid Waste Management District, which paid half of the cost. The other half came from remaining funds in a 2020 city bond.

Seymour’s new clam truck replaces one that no longer runs, giving the city two clam trucks to pick up large piles of trash and debris.

The Jackson County Solid Waste Management District collects a $1 per ton tipping fee for trash dumped at the Rumpke landfill in Medora. It then invests that money back into the community by funding recycling equipment and programs in Seymour, Brownstown, Crothersville and Medora.

As part of the funding from the solid waste district, Seymour agrees to let other Jackson County municipalities use the truck if needed, such as in the event of a storm.

DPW Director Chad Dixon said he plans to work with Seymour High School’s Owl Manufacturing program to design, manufacture and apply vinyl graphics on the new truck.

The class recently finished a similar project for DPW’s new rear load packer truck.

Dixon said DPW and the city benefit greatly from the relationship they have with the Jackson County Solid Waste Management District and Owl Manufacturing.

“They impact us in a positive way, for sure,” he said.
