Make Seymour Shine coming up

Seymour’s annual community effort to beautify the city by offering free trash pickups is just a couple of weeks away.

Make Seymour Shine takes place from April 4 through April 8. During the week, the Seymour Department of Public Works will accept one pickup load of trash free of charge for city residents.

Free trash pickups are only available for residential areas and small businesses and are handled during regular waste pickup days.

To receive a free trash pickup from the department, city residents should set their trash out on their regular trash day. No alley pickup will be done.

Yard waste, appliances and all other scrap metal (including appliances with Freon) are accepted for pickup or drop-off.

Trash, metal and yard waste should be separated. Landscaping, wood debris, drywall and remodeling debris also are accepted but should be separated from yard waste.

Latex paint can be picked up but must be dried with cat litter, sawdust or oil dry.

Only four used vehicle tires will be accepted per household, but tires from semitrailers and agricultural equipment will not be eligible.

Household hazardous wastes, like pesticides, old fuels, cleaner or oil-based paint, may be brought to the department’s garage at 865 F Ave. East at Freeman Field during regular hours at the recycle information booth.

The garage is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

No phone calls are required for free pickups. Phone calls are only necessary for anyone who wants their car picked up. For car pickups, call the GSG manager at 812-524-1100. Titles are required.

A $20 fee is required for televisions, computer monitors and laptops.

Asbestos items are not accepted.
