Benter, Waskom earn IBCA all-state honors

Brownstown Central’s Jack Benter and Carter Waskom were both honored on Thursday afternoon when the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association released its IBCA/Franciscan Health boys all-state honors.

Fifteen seniors and 15 underclass boys basketball players earned the “Supreme 15” all-state honors. Benter was selected as one of the “Supreme 15” for the underclassmen.

The sophomore averaged 26.6 points per game for the Braves this season in the regular season, and he averaged 30.3 points in the three postseason games Brownstown played. The Braves won a sectional championship before falling to Beech Grove in the regional semifinals.

Joining Benter on the underclassmen “Supreme 15” list was Kokomo’s Flory Bidunga, Indianapolis Cathedral’s Xavier Booker, North Central’s Joey Brown, Penn’s Markus Burton, Anderson’s Ahmere Carson, Ben Davis’ Zane Doughty, Fishers’ Jalen Haralson, Linton-Stockton’s Joey Hart, Zionsville’s Logan Imes, Valparaiso’s Mason Jones, Carmel’s Sam Orme, Bloomington North’s JaQualon Roberts, Munster’s Brandon Trilli and Gary 21st Century Charter’s Ashton Williamson.

The IBCA senior all-state “Supreme 15” list was Indianapolis Cathedral’s Tayshawn Comer, Pike’s Ryan Conwell, Warren Central’s Tae Davis, Central Noble’s Connor Essegian, Chesterton’s Travis Grayson, Lawrence North’s C.J. Gunn, Fort Wayne Northrop’s Jalen Jackson, Mt. Vernon’s Armon Jarrard, Fort Wayne Snider’s Karson Jenkins, Sullivan’s Randy Kelley, Homestead’s Fletcher Loyer, Brebeuf Jesuit’s Billy Smith, Westfield’s Braden Smith, South Bend Adams’ Tommy Snyder and Carmel’s Peter Suder.

Waskom was selected as an honorable mention for the IBCA all-state. In his senior season, he averaged 18.0 points per game in the regular season and 16.3 points in the postseason.

Waskom was also invited to the Hoosier Basketball Magazine’s Top 60 Senior Workout, which is set for Sunday at Marian University.

Boys primarily from northern and southern Indiana will participate in the first session from 1-3 p.m., followed by players from mostly Central Indiana in the second session from 3-5 p.m. Crispus Attucks coach Chris Hawkins will direct both sessions along with Central Noble’s John Bodey, Gary 21st Century’s Larry Upshaw, Cloverdale’s Patrick Rady and Bloomington North’s Jason Speer.

Both sessions are open to the public with an admission fee of $8 (students are $5).
