County unemployment rate at 1.9%

Jackson County’s unemployment rate stood at 1.9% in January, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development’s latest report released Monday.

Overall, 22,682 county residents were on the job in January, which is four more than in January 2021 when 22,678 county residents were working. The jobless rate at that time was 4%.

The January rate, which is preliminary, rose from the December 2021 final rate, which was 1.2%.

The number of county residents reporting they were looking for work in January of this year was 446, compared to the 946 who were looking for work during the same month a year earlier.

The county’s labor force was 23,128 in January, which is 486 less than the same month in 2021.

The county’s unemployment rate for January was lower than the state’s rate of 2.4% and the national rate of 4.4%.

Other nearby counties and their unemployment rates for January were Bartholomew, 1.9%; Brown, 2.3%; Jennings, 2.6%; Lawrence, 2.5%; Monroe, 2%; Scott, 2.6%; and Washington, 2.1%.

LaGrange County had the lowest rate in the state at 1.4% in December, and Lake County had the highest at 4.2%.
