Sports scholarships are available in memory of Jessica Barkman.

Barkman was a 1991 graduate of Seymour High School who received the most valuable player award in volleyball, basketball and track and field during her senior year. She attended Indiana State University on a volleyball scholarship.

She died in a traffic accident in Texas in 1997 and is remembered and admired for her outstanding talent and strong determination. After her death, a scholarship fund to financially help girls strengthen their athletic ability by attending sports camps, playing club ball, etc. was established. The scholarships are based on financial need, athletic ability and a coach’s recommendation.

Last year’s recipients were Gracie Adams, Seymour Middle School, club volleyball; Kenzie Gagner, Seymour Middle School, Seymour Volleyball Club; and Valeria Galicia, St. Ambrose Catholic School, Cougar Club Volleyball.

Scholarship applications, due April 1, are available at Girls Inc. of Jackson County, 956 N. O’Brien St., Seymour, or online at girlsincjackson.org.
