Braves look to keep momentum in regional semifinal

The enjoyment period for the Brownstown Central girls basketball team’s third sectional title in three years was a little shorter than in years past.

Usually, the Braves clinched the title on a Saturday and have a full week to enjoy it while preparing for the regional semifinal, but because weather pushed everything back, Brownstown played its sectional semifinal and final this past Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

The Braves got the job done, and head coach Brandon Allman wanted them to enjoy it while they could.

“We’ll go home, hopefully hop on the firetrucks and just soak this one in,” Allman said after the game.

Now, it’s all business again for Brownstown as it prepares for a 21-4 Indiana Creek team.

This is an Indian Creek team that hasn’t lost since Dec. 28 and is currently riding a 9-game winning streak. Indian Creek defeated Indianapolis Ritter 66-31, Indianapolis Herron 79-22 and Speedway 57-50 in sectionals to get to this point.

“I know they’re really good,” Allman said.

These Braves are led in scoring by Lauren Foster, who averages 17.1 points per game. Although Foster poses a threat on the perimeter, one of the tougher matchups for Brownstown will come down low with 6-foot-3 forward Faith Wiseman.

Wiseman averages 12.2 points per game, 10.9 rebounds per game and 3.3 blocks per game.

“They have a girl that can really score the basketball and an athlete that’s just 6’3, and you can’t teach 6’3,” Allman said. “We’ll study them up and hopefully be ready to go.”

Brownstown is led in scoring by Maddy Hackman, who averages 15.4 points per game. Hackman scored 11 points in the sectional final after scoring 20 in the semifinal. She eclipsed over 1,000 points for her career this past Wednesday night at Northview.

The other leading scorers in the Braves’ starting lineup are Kalee Borden at 7.5 ppg, Emma Klinge at 7.0, Hannah Stahl 6.9 and Andrea Bair 3.7. Borden led Brownstown with 17 points in the sectional title victory.

Borden said after the game that she knew her team was in foul trouble and needed someone to step up, so she took it upon herself to do that on both sides of the ball.

Brownstown is on a bit of a roll itself. The Braves have won six games in a row and have gone 11-3 in its last 14 games.

En route to their third-straight regional semifinal appearance, the Braves defeated Owen Valley 46-30 in the first round of sectionals, West Vigo 48-35 in the semifinal and Northview 46-36 in the final.

Saturday’s regional semifinal won’t be an easy task against Indian Creek, but this is a Brownstown team that played a tough schedule in the regular season to be prepared for games like these.

“We’ll all come in ready to play,” Borden said. “We’ll study on the bus, and we always come ready to play.”

The game is slated to tipoff at 10 a.m. at Greencastle High School. Tickets will be $8 cash only.
