CAMPBELLSBURG — The Trinity Lutheran girls basketball team picked up its third straight Class 1A Sectional title Tuesday night by defeating West Washington 47-34 on the Senators’ floor.

“It feels pretty good,” Coach Mike Lang said. “They never get old. We’re cutting nets down. We get a few more days of practice.”

Trinity had trouble putting the ball in the basket in the first half as they shot 3-for-14 from the floor in the first period and were 7-for-31 for the half.

Lang said, “We were getting our shots. We knew they were going to fall. It was only a matter of time.”

There are five seniors on the team — Kailene Cockerham, Hannah Durham, Kayla Goecker and twins Katelyn and Emma Schepman.

“It feels great,” Emma Schepman said of the title.

Katelyn said, “We’re all really close. We’re always together.”

Trinity needed a big second half as the Cougars trailed 19-18 at the half.

After the Senators scored the first basket of the third period, Bailey Tabeling hit a 3-pointer, Jordan Brewer scored off an offensive rebound, and Tabeling scored another basket for a 7-0 run and a 25-20 lead.

Tabeling was hot throughout the quarter with 12 of her game-high 20 points.

Liza Froedge made a 3-pointer and followed up with a short jump shot during the middle of the period to extend Trinity’s lead to 32-23, and the Cougars held a 39-29 lead entering the fourth period.

Tabeling and Brewer scored baskets early in the fourth period to put Trinity up 43-29 before West Washington scored all five of its points in the final period.

The Cougars took a 4-0 lead three minutes into the opening period on a pair of free throws by Liza Froedge, followed by a basket by Emma Schepman.

Madison Keith scored back-to-back baskets later in the period to help the Cougars hold an 8-7 lead going into the second quarter.

Tabeling made a layup early in the second period to put Trinity up 13-9 before the Senators outscored the Cougars 10-5 the remainder of the half to lead 19-18 at the half.

Tabeling and Keith each made two field goals in the first half as Trinity shot 7 for 31 from the floor.

Alandra Johnson topped the Senators (15-8) with 10 points.
