A winter storm warning issued Wednesday morning remains in effect across southern Indiana, including Jackson County, throughout today.

The National Weather Service was calling for a heavy mix of precipitation overnight into this morning. Sleet and snow accumulations are expected to be in access of 3 inches along with ice accumulations of up to two-tenths of an inch.

The drivers of 29 trucks with the Indiana Department of Transportation’s Bloomington Subdistrict of the Seymour District were scheduled to start patrolling and treating and plowing state roads and Interstate 65 — as needed — late Wednesday afternoon. The Brownstown Unit of the Bloomington Subdistrict, which includes all but the southeastern part of Jackson County, also will have snowplows on the roadways.

With the forecast of those conditions, officials with Seymour Community Schools made the decision Wednesday morning that today would be an inclement weather eLearning day. Students’ lessons will be posted in Google Classroom by 9 a.m., and students should expect one to two hours of instruction. There will not be any live instruction. Once posted, the work will be due in three to four days. For information, contact your child’s school.

Crothersville Community Schools are closed today and Friday, and both will be eLearning days.

Brownstown Central Community Schools and Medora Community Schools both are closed today, too.

Sandy Creek Christian Academy in Seymour is having eLearning days today and Friday. Teachers will post assignments through Google Classroom or they sent packets home with students on Wednesday.

For other Jackson County parochial schools, Immanuel Lutheran School, Trinity Lutheran High School and St. John’s Sauers Lutheran School, all in Seymour, will observe an eLearning day today, and Zion Lutheran School in Seymour will have an eLearning day and its day care will be closed. The Sauers preschool also will not be in session today.

Due to the predicted weather conditions, Girls Inc. of Jackson County in Seymour will be closed today. The facility follows Seymour Community Schools’ weather policy for closures.

The Boys and Girls Club locations in Seymour, Brownstown and Jennings County, however, will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. today. Jennings County members will go to the Country Squire Lakes location for the day.

The Jackson County Clerk’s Office in the Jackson County Judicial Center in Brownstown will be closed today. If the office also is closed Friday, the deadline for individuals to file for candidacy in the primary election will be noon Monday. If the office is only closed today, the filing deadline remains at noon Friday.

Jackson County REMC announced its lobby and drive-thru will be closed today and Friday. Employees will be working from home and be available by phone, chat or email. Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, public information officer for the Indiana State Police Versailles Post, said he will be out early today and keep people updated on the conditions throughout the day on his Facebook page.

“We can’t stress it enough: If you absolutely have to go out on the roads, use extreme caution,” Wheeles said in a post Wednesday afternoon.

If you must travel, he said to have a full tank of gas, keep a hat, gloves and a scarf in your vehicle, keep windows clear and washer fluid full, use your headlights, decrease speed, increase following distance, put the cellphone down and keep snacks and drinks in your vehicle.

“Do not call 911 to inquire about road conditions, as emergency services will be very busy with actual emergencies,” Wheeles wrote. “511in.org is a great resource to find out about current road conditions. You can even view snowplow camera pictures or stationary INDOT cameras where you can see current conditions throughout the entire state.”
