Seymour girls primed for sectional meet

Like most things, the weather has thrown a wrench into the Seymour girls swimming team’s schedule.

The Owls were scheduled to compete in the sectional prelims tonight at Floyd Central, but that has been moved to Friday instead with the finals still taking place Saturday.

Instead of a day break in between the two events, the Owls now have to be razor sharp Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

“Doing it back-to-back is not ideal,” senior Samantha Jacobi said. “I’d rather have a day in between the first day and second day of sectional to recover, but we’re going to make it work.”

“We just need to make sure our mindset is how it usually is and we just come in ready to race,” senior Maren McClure said.

Last year, the Owls placed third at sectional and also set two school records. Sandy Cerino broke the 50 freestyle record with a 25.05, and Cerino, McClure, Jacobi and Katya Cox broke the 400 freestyle relay record with a 3:43.67.

McClure was able to qualify for state for Seymour.

“Last year, we all performed great,” McClure said.

This weekend, the Owls are aiming for a higher finish.

“We are pushing for second place because we were very close to second in conference,” Cox said.

Similar to last year, they feel like the relay races are their strengths.

McClure said having three of the four swimmers return from the record-breaking team last year has been very beneficial.

“Me, Maren and Katya have been swimming together for a while, and we have a pretty tight bond,” Jacobi said. “Sandy was amazing last year and we were all good friends, and we’re good friends with Olivia (Fish), too.”

In addition to the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, McClure will be competing in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke. Jacobi will be in the 50 and 100 freestyles, and Cox will be in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Cox, Jacobi and McClure were selected as the three captains for the girls team.

“It’s always a privilege to be able to coach and teach the girls what it means to put in hard work, just being able to lead them and be that example for them,” McClure said. “I know when I was a freshman, I looked up to the senior captains a lot. Just being able to do that for them, it means a lot.”

Before the races, a lot of the girls like to have some of those Gatorade gummies to get their energy level higher, and McClure and Jacobi said they share a similar playlist for prerace tunes.

The girls have been tapering for a couple weeks now, preparing to be as fresh and fast as possible come Friday and Saturday.

“I’m finally not sore and tired for once, so that’s pretty nice,” Jacobi said.

“Right now, we’re just preparing our muscles, so we should be ready to race,” McClure said.

Friday’s competition starts at 6 p.m. at Floyd Central, and Saturday’s finals will begin at 1 p.m.
