Brownstown’s Tiemeyer, Wischmeier earn all-county honors

Brownstown Central had an impressive football season this past fall, going 11-1 (undefeated regular season) and winning the Mid-Southern Conference.

The Braves won their rivalry game over Seymour 48-13.

The Braves had an explosive offense and stifling defense, and there were two players who stood out on both ends of the ball.

On offense, Kiernan Tiemeyer was the Braves’ leading rusher and receiver, and he also started quarterback for one game against North Harrison. With his season in 2021, Tiemeyer has been named The Tribune’s All-County Offensive Player of the Year.

On defense, Eli Wischmeier topped the Braves in defensive points with 93, and he had 94 total tackles. Due to his performance in 2021, Wischmeier has been named The Tribune’s All-County Defensive Player of the Year.

Tiemeyer had 1,336 rushing yards and 312 receiving yards, but he was quick to deflect the credit for his stellar senior season.

“I think most of it was just the offensive line,” Tiemeyer said. “They were all seniors, most of them starting their junior year and some started their sophomore year, so they were pretty dominant most games.”

Tiemeyer was the Braves’ quarterback in 2020, but head coach Reed May decided to move him for this fall.

“He called me in December last year and told me about it. I agreed with him because I wanted to run the ball more,” Tiemeyer said. “It made sense to put Carson (Darlage) at quarterback because he’s a lot bigger, and he’s running up the middle. It worked out really well.”

Tiemeyer said he enjoyed just getting an open lane with a couple of guys out in the open field and making them miss. Brownstown didn’t throw the ball a whole lot, but when they did, it was usually a big play because teams weren’t expecting it.

The Brownstown senior also returned kicks and had two kickoffs returned for a touchdown this season.

“It was pretty fun,” he said. “I always enjoyed special teams, and I always wanted to return kicks.”

Wischmeier came up big for the Braves in big moments.

Against Scottsburg, he had a tackle for loss that stalled a drive to slow down their offense and help Brownstown clinch the MSC title.

Every Friday night, Wischmeier’s name would be mentioned at the top of Brownstown’s stat sheet. Against Silver Creek, he led the team with nine tackles, and against North Harrison, he led the team with an impressive 15 tackles, and those were just a few examples.

“Just paid attention to my coaches in practice, just pushed myself in every drill we had and just tried to be a team leader out there on the field,” Wischmeier said.

Wischmeier was outside linebacker to begin the season, but was shortly moved to inside linebacker, where he would fill the gaps to try to stuff the ball carrier.

He’s always loved the defensive side of the ball, and as a freshman at Brownstown, he started at defensive end, but the final three years he played in the linebacker position.

After graduating from Brownstown, Wischmeier plans to go to Purdue University to study something in agriculture.

In the regular season, Brownstown averaged 43.4 points per game and only allowed 20.8 points per game.

“We started playing games, people started having fun, everyone started locking in and I think we all realized, ‘Man, we can be pretty good,’” Tiemeyer said. “We had good leaders this year on the team.”

“It was so fun,” Wischmeier said. “I couldn’t have wished for a better senior year. It would’ve been great to beat Lawrenceburg in the sectional game, but still going 11-0 going into that sectional championship game, that was fun.”

The last four years provided a lot of special moments for Wischmeier and Tiemeyer at Brownstown. Both of their favorite memories included the exciting Seymour game in 2020, as well as the one this past fall.

“It was pretty awesome just to play under coach May,” Tiemeyer said. “He worked us hard, and there were times where it was like, ‘Is it worth it?’ But in the end, it was all completely worth it. We made great memories and everything.”
