A 20-year-old Jackson County man faces rape and child molesting charges related to a report that he had sexually assaulted a juvenile female for a period of six to seven years, police report.

The arrest of Garrett M. Minton of Seymour on Thursday afternoon is the result of an investigation that started Dec. 1 when the Seymour Police Department received a report from the Indiana Department of Child Services, according to a news release from Lt. C.J. Foster.

The report stated a juvenile female had been sexually assaulted by a male for approximately six to seven years, Foster said,

The sexual assaults began when the two were juveniles and continued until the male, later identified as Minton, was 19, Foster said. The victim was still a juvenile when the alleged sexual assaults stopped.

On Wednesday, investigators conducted a forensic interview at Susie’s Place Child Advocacy Center in Bloomington.

On Thursday, investigators interviewed Minton, who admitted to sexually assaulting the victim over the time period mentioned, Foster said. That interview led to Minton’s arrest on Level 3 felony charges of rape and child molesting and a Level 5 felony charge of criminal confinement.

Minton was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 2:18 p.m. Thursday and was being held without bond pending his initial court appearance in Jackson Circuit Court.

A Level 3 felony is punishable by three to 16 years in prison with an advisory sentence of eight years if convicted.
