A 35-year-old Washington County woman has been charged with reckless homicide in connection with the fatal shooting of a man in a wooded area Friday afternoon in the Salem area.

Michael J. Walker, 55, of Austin was found dead after a 911 call was made to authorities at 3:16 p.m. indicating a man had been shot in an area near the 1600 block of North Peacock Hollow Road, according to a news release from Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, public information officer for the Indiana State Police Versailles Post.

Krystal Grangier of Salem was initially arrested on a Class A misdemeanor charge of false informing but was later charged with reckless homicide in connection with Walker’s death after an autopsy was conducted Saturday.

Police said Walker and two other men were looking for ginseng on property behind a home when the incident that led to Walker’s death occurred. The men also had two dogs with them.

During the investigation, police were able to obtain information that Grangier had fired at least one gunshot in the direction of Walker and the dogs.

Grangier is being held in the Washington County Jail in Salem pending her initial court appearance.
