Jackson County Reserve Deputy James “Rick” Richard Hirtzel, age 55, a native and resident of Seymour, passed away on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at Kindred Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was born on August 10, 1966 to Morris Joseph Hirtzel of Seymour, Indiana and the late Beverly (Taylor) Deckard. He was educated at Seymour schools and graduated from Indiana Wesleyan with a BS in Business Management. Rick was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Seymour, Fraternal Order of Police and served his Country proudly in the United States Air Force. He will forever be remembered as a big hearted man that loved to help people and serve any way that he could. He was easy going, loving and enjoyed kids very much. He was an active participant in the “Shop With A Cop” children’s Christmas program. Rick was a wonderful provider for his family and has a deep, dedicated work ethic. He loved to work which was reflective of his over 32 years at Nippon in Seymour. Rick served as a Reserve Deputy for over 32 years and loved his fellow Deputies on the Jackson County Sheriffs Department and considered them an extension of his family. Rick was a beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend to many and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him and each life that he touched.

He is survived by his wife of over 36 years, Julie (Peacher) Hirtzel of Seymour, Indiana, one son, Dwight A. Weddel of Seymour, Indiana and one daughter, Chelsea D. Hirtzel of Seymour, Indiana. Two brothers, Joey Hirtzel of Seymour, Indiana and Karl Hirtzel and his wife Diane of Seymour, Indiana. Two sisters, Leeann Kelley and her husband Mike of Scipio, Indiana and Katrina Hirtzel of Seymour, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

The family will receive friends on Monday, October 18, 2021 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Woodlawn Family Funeral Centre. Visitation will resume on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 from 10:00 AM until service time. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 beginning at 1:00 PM at Woodlawn Family Funeral Centre with Rev. Jimmy Rodriguez officiating. He will be laid to rest at Riverview Cemetery with full military honors.
