After a car broke free from a flatbed trailer and rolled onto Interstate 65, an Indiana State Police trooper from the Sellersburg Post was injured Wednesday morning.

Shortly after 7 a.m., Trooper Jonathan Cain was on duty and sitting stationary in his vehicle in the median crossover on I-65 at the 33 mile marker just south of the Austin exit. Cain was checking the interstate for stranded motorists and monitoring for traffic violations, according to a news release from Sgt. Carey Huls, public information officer for the Sellersburg Post.

At the same time, a black Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, driven by Andrew Tarr, 40, of Seymour, was pulling a flatbed trailer southbound on the interstate.

The trailer was hauling a Volkswagen Jetta that broke free from its cargo straps while the truck was traveling southbound from the Seymour area.

While the truck and trailer continued down the interstate, the Jetta rolled off of the back of the trailer, entering the roadway and then traveling off of the east side of the southbound lane and colliding with Cain’s police car.

Cain suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by Scott County Emergency Medical Services to Baptist Floyd Hospital in New Albany. From there, he was transferred to University Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

Tarr was not injured and immediately stopped at the crash scene. He was cited for unsecure load and later released from the scene.

An Indiana State Police crash reconstruction investigator was called to assist in the crash investigation. The crash remains under investigation.
