Column: Jesus pointed people toward him

By Steve Greene

We have been exploring the various ways God makes himself known to us.

Isn’t it interesting that God wants us to be known and he reveals so much about his character, his nature and how we can relate to him through his Word?

The Bible is a credible source to tell us about the nature of God. Written over a 1,500-year span by 40 different authors, in different locations and on separate continents, in three different languages, covering diverse subjects, at different points in history, the Bible continues to consistently affirm the fact that God created the world that we live in.

Archaeological discoveries continue to substantiate the historical accuracy of the Word of God. The message of the Gospel is woven through the pages of scripture, from beginning to end. And the Bible is where we learn that God deeply loves us with an unconditional love.

He created us to have a relationship with him that can last for all eternity. According to the Bible, that relationship is made possible through Jesus. And Jesus Christ happens to be the greatest confirmation of God’s existence that there is.

In all of the major religions of the world, you’ll find that people like Buddha, Muhammad, Confucius and even Moses all identified themselves as teachers or prophets. None of them claimed to be equal to God. But Jesus not only claimed equality with God, he claimed to be God.

Jesus basically said, “God exists, and when you are looking at me, you are looking at him.” In John 14:9, Jesus said, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the father. So why are you asking me to show him to you?”

He also said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness because you will have the light that leads to life.” — (John 8:12)

Jesus forgave people of their sin. He set people free from the power of sin. He offered to give people a more abundant life, and ultimately, eternal life in heaven. Jesus claimed attributes that belong only to God.

Unlike other teachers who focused people on their words, Jesus pointed people to himself. He never said, “Follow my words and you will find truth.” He said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one can come to the father except through me.” (John 14:6)
