A prisoner overpowered and strangled a Jackson County correctional officer until he was unconscious Monday afternoon at Schneck Medical Center, police report.

Jackson Andrew Hatchett, 27, of Brownstown faces at least four new criminal charges in connection with the assault on the officer in a failed attempt to escape.

Those preliminary charges include escape, a Level 4 felony; strangulation, a Level 5 felony; theft, a Level 6 felony; and criminal mischief, a Class A misdemeanor, according to a news release from Lt. C.J. Foster with the Seymour Police Department.

Foster said the assault on the correctional officer, whose name was not released, occurred as Hatchett was being discharged from the hospital.

The correctional officer sustained multiple injuries during the assault, including loss of consciousness from being strangled. His condition was not available at press time, Foster said.

After the assault, Hatchett barricaded himself in a bathroom before breaking out a third-story window. He then jumped out of that window, sustaining several lacerations to both arms, onto the roof of a second story. From there, he was able to enter a mechanical room accessible from the roof, police said.

Hatchett was caught several moments later after a Seymour officer working security at the hospital cornered him in the mechanical room until on-duty Seymour officers could arrive, Foster said.

The correctional officer received treatment for his injuries at the hospital, and Hatchett was treated in the emergency room for his injuries.

Hatchett had been in jail on a charge of possession of methamphetamine following his arrest early Sunday morning by Brownstown police.

The incident was first reported at 12:24 p.m. by hospital security.
