Seymour’s baseball team was stung by a couple of tough-luck plays in the bottom of the fifth inning that allowed Floyd Central to escape with a 1-0 win in Thursday’s first round of the Floyd Central Sectional.

A seemingly harmless single turned into a triple for the Highlanders’ Evan Goforth when Seymour right fielder Treyton McCormick slipped on the outfield turf as the ball skipped all the way to the wall.

Moments later, Casey Sorg beat out a chopper to Owl shortstop Bret Perry, allowing Goforth to score the game’s only run.

Floyd Central advances to Saturday’s semifinal round and will take on New Albany, an 8-2 winner over Jennings County in Thursday’s first game.

The narrow loss spoiled an excellent outing by Seymour pitcher Aden Burnside, who threw six innings, striking out three while giving up just five hits. The junior left-hander worked out of a one-out bases-loaded jam in the third inning and had Floyd Central’s hitters off balance all night.

Seymour’s offense was limited to two singles by Charlie Longmeier and Vince Wilson. The Owls had runners in scoring position in the first, third, sixth and seventh innings, but could never drive them home.

Thursday’s loss ends Seymour’s six-game winning streak and closes its season with a 15-10 record.
