A 28-year-old Bartholomew County man faces four charges including battery on a public servant related to an incident early Tuesday morning north of Seymour, police report.

Joshua Allen McLemore of Columbus also faces charges of leaving the scene of a property damage wreck, theft and resisting law enforcement in connection with the incident that began when Jackson County Officer Jordan Hawn responded to a report of a vehicle stopped on the side of the road in the 10000 block of North U.S. 31.

When Hawn arrived in the area at about 4:10 a.m. Tuesday, he reported seeing a person leave the vehicle and go through the yard of a residence to the north, according to a news release from Jackson County Sheriff Rick Meyer.

A short time later, Hawn said he found male, later identified as McLemore, lying on the ground in the backyard of that residence. At that point, the man got up but started resisting Hawn’s commands, police said.

Hawn said he then tased the man, but was unsuccessful in stopping him.

McLemore and Hawn then wrestled around for several minutes before Hawn could get him handcuffed, police said.

Hawn said McLemore was making strange noises and was impaired at the time of his arrest and later told police he had been smoking methamphetamine and using heroin.

Both McLmore and Hawn were treated at Schneck Medical Center in Seeymour before being released. McLemore was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown and was being held without bond pending his initial hearing.

The investigation show that vehicle McLemore was seen leaving had ran off the road for several hundred feet, striking culverts and a speed limit sign before coming to rest, police said.

Besides Meyer, Hawn was assisted by county officers Alan Jones and Justin Amos, officers with Seymour Police Department and state troopers.
