Another mural coming to downtown Seymour

Another day, another mural.

That’s right, a second building in downtown Seymour has been chosen to become a canvas for another work of art.

Seymour Main Street is funding the project and is looking for an artist to paint the mural on the west facing exterior wall of the Artistic Impressions building at 127 W. Second St.

Now through May 21, the organization is accepting proposals for the mural through a request for proposal process.

The budget for the project is $30,000.

“Creating a vibrant downtown is one benefit of public art such as murals,” said Bri Roll, executive director of Seymour Main Street. “More downtowns are becoming destinations for viewing murals and public art, and it’s a way for the character of our community to be displayed and brought to life through an art piece.”

Qualified artists may submit their proposal in PDF format online at seymourmainstreet.org/mural, by emailing it to [email protected] or by mailing it to Bri Roll, P.O. Box 1001, Seymour, IN 47274.

The brick wall is 99 feet in length and 33 feet in height and has several windows from upstairs apartments. The artist chosen will have the artistic freedom to come up with a design that partially or totally encompasses the wall.

The building is owned by Tom Goecker. He has served as president of the Seymour Main Street board of directors in the past and remains involved with the group.

The deadline for artists’ applications and proposals is May 21, after which finalists will be chosen. From June 7 to 21, Seymour Main Street will seek public input on what the mural should look like and on the finalists.

The winning artist will be announced July 14, and the project will begin in late July with a completion date of no later than Oct. 2.

It will be Seymour Main Street’s second downtown mural project. The first is located on the north facing side of the Edward Jones Adam Jackson office building at 201 S. Chestnut St.

That mural was commissioned in 2019 and features different visual elements of Seymour’s history, including the Oktoberfest, Tuskegee Airmen and Reno brothers, that are depicted within the letters that spell out Seymour.

Roll said originally, Seymour Main Street had wanted to accomplish a mural in 2020, but those plans were put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Another mural currently in the planning stages is at the Seymour Chamber of Commerce building at 105 S. Chestnut St. That project funded by the chamber is scheduled to get underway in July and be completed by the end of September. Once it and the Seymour Main Street mural are complete, there will be a total of five downtown murals.

There is one located on the back of the Community Agency Building, and there’s the John Mellencamp mural on the east side of the This Old Guitar building on West Second Street.

Eventually, Roll would like to be able to organize a walking tour of downtown to include the murals.
