Local vets step up in time of need

On March 21, we had an emergency situation needing 40 feral and free-roaming cat surgeries, and Dr. Kristin Tormoehlen and Dr. Bonnie Vogel of Brownstown Veterinary Clinic stepped up and did all of the spay/neuter surgeries on their day off — Sunday.

The 40 cats had been trapped on Saturday in Bartholomew and Jackson counties by volunteers of The Big Fix of Jackson County and Columbus Animal Care Services.

I was scheduled to drive the 40 cats to SPOT Spay/Neuter Clinic in Terre Haute the morning of March 21 for their surgeries, but at 3:30 a.m., I received a text message from the owner of SPOT telling me they were not able to do the surgeries.

In panic mode, I called the emergency line at Brownstown Veterinary Clinic at 9 a.m. explaining the situation, and Dr. Tormoehlen returned my call within 10 minutes asking us to bring the cats at 11 a.m., giving her time to call in their staff.

When I told her how grateful we were, Dr. Tormoehlen said, “I am happy to do this because I can’t think about you having to turn these trapped cats loose without being altered.” The surgeries weren’t finished until 7 p.m. Sunday.

Over a period of eight years from one cat having an unwanted litter, more than 2 million cats can be born. So you can see the importance of Dr. Kristin and Dr. Bonnie’s efforts March 21 for Jackson and Bartholomew counties. Truly, Dr. Kristin and Dr. Bonnie are animal welfare rock stars.
