After a traffic stop in Seymour, a K-9-assisted search ended in the arrest of two Brownstown residents, according to an incident report from the Seymour Police Department.

Matthew Scott Tyler Norman, 25, and Hayden Devonne Gray, 22, both face charges of possession of methamphetamine, a Level 5 felony; possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor; and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

Norman also faces a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, a Level 4 felony, and Gray faces a charge of carrying a handgun without a license, a Class A misdemeanor.

At approximately 2 a.m. Wednesday, Officer Jessiah Watts stopped a Ford Escape, driven by Gray with Norman as a passenger, at Brown Street and Marley Lane because of an equipment violation. Officer Armando Pasillas, K-9 officer Devlin McMindes and K-9 Edi assisted with the stop.

Edi performed a free air sweep around the vehicle when he indicated a positive alert for drugs inside the vehicle.

A subsequent search led to the discovery of a loaded handgun in the glovebox of the vehicle and multiple portable safes throughout the car, police said.

The safes contained scales, glass smoking pipes, plastic baggies, crystal methamphetamine and spare handgun ammunition. More ammunition was found in Norman’s pocket upon search. Marijuana also was recovered from the vehicle in a bag on the driver’s side floorboard.

Gray and Norman refused to answer any questions at the scene, police said.

They were booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown and being held without bond pending initial hearings in Jackson Circuit Court.

In Indiana, a Level 4 felony could result in two to 12 years in prison with an advisory sentence of six years if convicted, and a Level 5 felony could mean one to six years in prison with an advisory sentence of three years upon conviction.
