Roadblock to benefit Special Olympics Polar Plunge

Special Olympics Indiana Jackson County is conducting a roadblock from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Second and Walnut streets in downtown Seymour.

Money raised will go toward the Seymour Tsunamis’ fundraising efforts for Special Olympics Indiana’s signature fundraiser, the Polar Plunge.

Athletes and volunteers from the county program will be joined by community supporters in participating in the Borden Polar Plunge on Feb. 20 at Deam Lake State Recreation Area.

In recent months, they have been fundraising online and collecting donations through canisters placed at local businesses.

Last year, the Seymour Tsunamis turned in $2,967 for Special Olympics Indiana, and at least 50% came back to the county program. Statewide, records were set with more than 3,500 plungers and $920,000 raised.

Fundraisers such as the Polar Plunge allow athletes to participate at no cost. There are more than 18,000 athletes in the state.

Special Olympics Indiana is a nonprofit organization that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in more than 20 Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities ages 8 and up.

If you can’t make it to the roadblock, donations can be made to team members online at secure.e2rm.com/p2p/fundraising/348724/team/932185.

This will be the third year in a row for Jackson County to have a team participate in the Borden Polar Plunge. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, each of the 13 Polar Plunge sites will look different this year with no spectators and safety protocols in place.
