Four men from Louisville, Kentucky, were arrested Tuesday morning after leading Indiana State Police on a pursuit that started on Interstate 65 in Bartholomew County and ended south of Seymour.

The pursuit began at about 1 a.m.  when Trooper Taylor Cosby stopped a 2015 Kia passenger vehicle on I-65 northbound near the 67 mile marker in Bartholomew County for traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour, said Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, Indiana State Police spokesman.

After making contact with the occupants of the vehicle, Cosby obtained information that criminal activity was taking place, police said. He was assisted at the scene by troopers Austin Straub and Taylor Ranshaw, both with the Versailles Post.

While troopers conducted the investigation, the driver of the vehicle, 27-year-old Derek J. Fajardo, placed it in drive and fled from the scene northbound on to I-65.  The vehicle made contact with Trooper Ranshaw when it fled the scene.  He was later treated for minor injuries, Wheeles said.

The troopers pursued the vehicle northbound on I-65 until Farjardo exited onto State Road 46 into Columbus. Fajardo then did a u-turn and entered back onto I-65 southbound.  The vehicle soon entered into Jackson County where Jackson County and Seymour police officers assisted by deploying a tire deflation device, which the vehicle struck before coming to a stop, police said.

Fajardo and three passengers in the vehicle, Jordan Griffith, 25, Breyon Bell, 28, and Gaulber Castro, 20, were taken into custody by officers with the Versailles and Sellersburg Districts, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and Seymour Police Department.

Shots were discharged from the suspect’s vehicle during the pursuit, police said. Three firearms were thrown from the vehicle during the pursuit and located along the interstate in Jackson County.

One of the guns thrown from the vehicle along with the vehicle were found to have been reported stolen out of Louisville. All four men also were found to be in possession of marijuana, Wheeles said.

The four each face charges of a possession of a stolen firearm, criminal recklessness with a firearm, possession of marijuana and obstruction of justice. Farjardo faces  additional charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, resisting law enforcement, battery and reckless driving.

Bell and Griffith, who also was arrested on a warrant out of Louisville, both face a charge of possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.

The men taken to the Bartholomew County Jail where they were being held pending their initial appearances in the Bartholomew County Circuit Court.

Farjardo is being held on a $141,000 bond while three other men were being held on $118,500.
