Jack Benter put on a spectacular shooting display for the Brownstown Central boys basketball team at home Saturday night.

Benter, a freshman, tied a school record with 10 3-pointers and scored 40 points to spark the Braves to a 66-50 Mid-Southern Conference win over Corydon Central.

He tied Chandler Lambring for the Braves’ most three-pointers made in one game.

Benter made two 3-pointers in the first quarter, one in the second, two in the third and five in the fourth.

Coach David Benter, the player’s father, said, “Jack had a hot hand tonight, and the guys did a good job getting him the ball. Things opened up on the perimeter, and we took advantage.”

The Braves (4-2 league, 9-5 overall) took a 5-0 lead on a free throw by guard Carter Waskom, and Benter scored eight to help the Braves to a 15-13 lead at the end of the first period.

Aidan Schroer scored six points in each of the first two periods and Benter added seven points in the second to help the Braves to a 29-27 lead at the half.

“Our defense early in the game was really good.” Benter said. “We had a hiccup at the end of the first period and at the start of the second quarter.”

Jack Benter came out hot at the start of the third period with eight points, including two 3-pointers, to extend the lead to 37-27.

“Our play at the start of the second half made the difference,” coach Benter said.

Waskom scored four baskets in the third period as the Braves took a 45-40 lead into the fourth quarter.

Benter made two 3-pointers early in the fourth as the hosts extended the lead to 51-40, and another 3-pointer by Benter helped the Braves to a 60-46 lead.

Waskom scored 14 points behind Jack Benter, and Schroer had 12, as the trio scored all of the BC points.

“Aidan did a nice job inside,” Benter said.

Tyler Fessel topped the Panthers (3-3, 6-11) with 18 points, and Bryce Weber scored 13.

“They are a dangerous team,” coach Benter said. “They have five guys that can score. There are a lot of teams in the conference with good, young players.”

For their next game, the Braves travel to Columbus East on Thursday night.
