FLOYDS KNOBS

A 15-0 first-half run separated Floyd Central from the Seymour boys basketball team Friday night.

The Highlanders coasted from there to a 65-44 victory over the Owls.

Seymour had inched back from an early seven-point deficit in the first quarter and trailed 11-8 when Floyd Central started its run.

Friday’s loss was the Owls’ fifth this season by 19 or more points. Seymour’s overall record dropped back under the .500 mark at 7-8 and slipped to 1-4 in the Hoosier Hills Conference.

Playing its first game in 13 days, Floyd Central (8-2, 2-1 HHC) looked sharp. After a solid first half, the Highlanders turned up their offense a notch in the third quarter, scoring 25 points on efficient 11-for-15 shooting from the field.

Floyd Central opened the second half with a 16-3 run that expanded a 12-point halftime lead to 46-21.

Ninety seconds into the fourth quarter, a 3-pointer by senior Jake Heidbreder bumped FC’s lead to 60-28 and allowed Highlander head coach Todd Sturgeon to start clearing his bench.

Over the last six minutes of the game, the Owls outscored Floyd Central 16-5 to narrow the score to its final 21-point margin.

Winners of four of their last six games, the Owls fell victim to a narrative oft-told during their losses this season: Not enough points and too many turnovers. Fifteen minutes into Friday’s contest, Seymour had nine turnovers and 10 points. Seymour ended the game with 16 errors, the most over its previous seven games.

Landon Fritsch was the Owls’ best option offensively the entire game, making seven of his 12 shots and finishing with a team-high 15 points.

Marcus Brooks followed with 10 points, while Eli Meyer added 8 points and 6 rebounds. Freshman Bret Perry came off the bench to score 5 points.

Floyd Central countered with three double-digit scorers, led by Heidbreder, who had a game-high 17. Brady Moore chipped in 16 points, followed by Caleb Washington’s 12.
