Conservation officers are investigating an apparent hunting accident Sunday morning that resulted in the death of a Columbus man.

At approximately 8:57 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 9200 block of South State Road 58 after 54-year-old John Walker was found unresponsive by a family member after he failed to return home, said Lt. Angela Goldman, a spokeswoman with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Goldman said Walker was suffering from a gunshot wound and that the initial investigation suggests it came from an accidental discharge of his firearm.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the exact cause of death is pending autopsy results, Goldman said.

The investigation is ongoing.
