A 21-year-old Seymour man was hospitalized Monday night after the Honda Civic he was driving was struck by a CSX train south of Seymour.

Oscar Aquino Lezama had to be freed from his vehicle by members of the Redding Township Volunteer Fire Department after the wreck reported at about 8 p.m., according to a news release from Jackson County Sheriff’s Department Officer Aaron Wilkins.

Lezama complained of head, neck and rib pain and was treated at the scene by personnel with Jackson County Emergency Medical Services before being taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour. He was later released.

Wilkins said Lezama was driving west on County Road 300N and attempting to cross the railroad tracks east of County Road 900E when his vehicle was hit by the southbound train, Wilkins said.

The vehicle was thrown from the roadway and came to rest on its top, police said.

When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, Lezama was conscious, Wilkins said.

He said witnesses said they saw Lezama stop at the railroad crossing before driving in front of the train.

Drugs or alcohol are not believed to have been a contributing factor, Wilkins said.

County Road 300N was closed for about an hour during the crash investigation and cleanup.

County officers Billy Dishman and Kevin Settle assisted along with county reserve officers Eric Browalski and Dakota Burke. Hampton Towing also assisted with cleaning up the crash.
