Applicants sought for redistricting commission

The ALL IN 4 Democracy Coalition has launched a campaign to give citizens a voice in the Indiana General Assembly’s once-in-a-decade process of drawing new voting district maps across the state using U.S. Census data.

Made up of 25 organizations, including the League of Women Voters, the ALL IN 4 Democracy Coalition is working in 2021 to make the redistricting process in Indiana more transparent. The centerpiece of this effort will be establishing a multipartisan team consisting of nine Hoosiers who will serve on an Indiana Citizens Redistricting Commission.

This commission will be diverse and representative of voters and will function to:

  • Hold virtual hearings and gather public testimony on how voting districts should be drawn for the next 10 years
  • Gather public input regarding criteria that should be used to draw district maps
  • Encourage citizens to use easily accessible mapping software to draw their own maps
  • Monitor the redistricting process of the General Assembly

Publicly defined criteria and maps created by the commission will be shared with legislators before the redistricting process starts.

Anyone interested in applying for a position on the commission and/or encouraging others to apply can go to tinyurl.com/ICRC-Application for further information and the application form. The application deadline is Jan. 4.
