A Brownstown couple lost the place they called home for nearly five years to a fire on Saturday afternoon.

No one was injured in the fire that destroyed the home of Walter and Donna Bowman at 124½ S. Stillwell St. in Ewing.

Walter, who was the only one in the 1,064-square-foot modular home at the time, was able to get out without injury, Donna said.

She was visiting a neighbor and had been there about 45 minutes when she decided to return home and found her home burning.

The Bowmans, who lost everything in the fire, were going to stay with one of their daughters.

“I had just bought our little 3-year-old everything for his Christmas,” Donna said.

Firefighters from Driftwood Township and Carr Township volunteer fire departments were the first to arrive at the scene and Brownstown firefighters arrived a few minutes later.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
