Owl swimmers split meet with visiting Bulldogs

The Seymour girls swim team built an early lead to defeat New Albany 113-67 on Tuesday night in the Owls’ pool.

The boys meet came down to the last relay — the 400 freestyle — with the Owls needing to place first and third, but they couldn’t pull that off and lost 93-87.

“We swam well,” veteran Seymour coach Dave Boggs said. “We knew on the boys’ side, it was going to be a very tough meet. We had a lot of lifetime bests tonight.

“The girls swam off tonight. We held some girls back. We gave the seniors two individual events and a couple other girls two. Most of the other girls only had one individual, but everybody had two relays.”

Katya Cox swam the 200 individual medley for the first time and won the event in 2:32.51.

“I don’t practice it much,” she said. “In practice, I mainly work on freestyle and backstroke. I’ve practiced the back and butterfly a little bit, so it wasn’t completely brand new, but it was weird.

“I usually swim the 200 free, and I alternate between the 500 free and the 100 backstroke. I swam the backstroke in the medley relay, and I swam the 400 free relay.”

Cox said she likes to push herself in new areas sometimes and like the relays better.

“There’s more of a team spirit in the relays,” she said.

Cox teamed up with Sandy Cerino, Maren McClure and Amelia Vasquez to win the 200 medley relay.

Vasquez also won the 50 free, Kirby Hill won the 100 fly, Cerino won the 100 breast, Kate Connell won diving and Camryn Wilson, Cox, Vasquez and Samantha Jacobi teamed up to win the 400 free relay.

Seymour will host Scottsburg, Salem, Silver Creek, Switzerland County and Southwestern (Hanover) for the Seymour Super Duals on Saturday. That meet will start at 9 a.m.

With Jackson County in red because of COVID-19, there were no spectators Tuesday night, and none will be allowed at Saturday’s meet.

“We’ll spread everybody out,” Boggs said. “We’ll stream the meet live on Facebook. We’re big enough here that we’ll spread out, and we’ll be safe.”

Cox said she is looking forward to Saturday.

“There are a lot of teams together, and you have a lot of sportsmanship, and it’s really nice because of that,” she said. “It’s another meet where you can try out new events.”

Aaron Drake likes swimming the freestyle sprints, and he won the 50 free against the Bulldogs in 24.59.

Drake, who also swam in the 200 medley relay, said the 50 free is his favorite individual event, and his career best is 24:35. He also swam the 200 free relay and the 100 back.

“I know what I’m good at,” Drake said. “It’s the 50 free and back. Everything else, I’m not the greatest. I like individual events so I can record how much I have improved, but I enjoy the sportsmanship with the relays.

“Swimming is definitely a teamwork thing for me because all the sets are hard. I want to do the 50 free Saturday, and I want to improve in the 100 back.”

Rico Cerino won the 100 butterfly and the 100 breast, and the Owls won the 200 freestyle with Larry Simons, Drake, Bryce Miller and Blake Stark forming that unit.
