This past general election saw a record number of registered voters cast ballots in Jackson County.

Not only did the county see record voter turnout, but the state of Indiana did, too.

This past election, Jackson County saw record voter turnout with 68% of registered voters in the county casting ballots. A voter turnout report from the Indiana secretary of state said 65% of Indiana’s registered voters participated in the last election.

Out of 28,642 registered voters in Jackson County, 19,422 voted in the general election.

There were 3,068,542 registered voters who participated in the general election in Indiana out of 4,751,708.

In 2016, 59% of registered voters in Jackson County participated in the general election. That put the county at a percentage above the state average voter turnout of 58% that year.

That year saw 17,976 registered voters vote out of 30,531 in the general election.

In Indiana, there was a total of 4,829,243 registered voters, 2,807,676 of which cast ballots in the 2016 general election.

This year also saw record early voting turnout in the county with 53% of registered voters in Jackson County voting before Election Day.

Jackson County Clerk Melissa Hayes said she was impressed by voter turnout this year.

"I knew it was going to be high, but some of the precincts were higher than we expected," she said.
