Silver Creek used a 15-0 run over the final five minutes of the third period to break open a close game and defeat Seymour 56-30 in a girls’ non-conference game Friday night in the Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium.

It was senior night for the Owls with senior players Grace Meyer, Jamya Miller and Alyssa Perry, and senior managers Zach Thompson and Sarah Kaufman, and their parents being introduced before the game.

The Dragons held a 31-22 lead at halftime before Meyer scored the first four points of the third period for a 31-26 lead.

The Owls missed a 3-pointer on their next possession that Owls coach Jason Longmeier noted could have cut the difference to two points.

The Dragons increased their lead to 46-26 at the end of the third period with the Owls not scoring again until Meyer made a basket early in the fourth period.

Meyer scored five points in the first quarter, while Perry had a 3-pointer and a free throw, and Miller scored a two-point basket for the Owls’ scoring in the first eight minutes.

Longmeier said he liked the way the Owls opened the game when they held a 9-6 lead on Perry’s 3-pointer with four minutes left in the period.

“I thought our execution in the first half was pretty good, especially in the first quarter,” he said. “I thought we came out with the right mindset. I thought we came out really executing the game plan and I thought we took the action to them early.

“I thought that resulted in an early timeout from Silver Creek, and they made some adjustments, but I thought for the first quarter-and-a-half we really played well.”

A layup by Meyer early in the second period cut the difference to 16-13, and a 3-pointer by Brooke Trinkle left the score 20-16 with 5:35 left in the half.

The Dragons were able to build their lead behind the 3-point shooting of Jaclyn Emly, who made three 3-pointers and scored 11 points in the first period, and she had another three, and six points in the second period.

The senior guard added two more threes in the third period to finish the game with six three-pointers and 23 points.

Longmeier said the Dragons (3-0) may have worn the Owls down, resulting in the 25-8 scoring advantage in the second half.

“I thought maybe we got a little bit tired late,” he said. “We stopped taking the game to them, and then we started making the same mistakes we made against Salem where we were just way too passive, and not aggressive.”

Seymour seemed to come out addressing that problem, though, Friday night.

“But I thought early on we were aggressive and got some of the shots we got and that’s why you saw a better first half,” he said.

The Owls shot 9-for-20 from the floor in the first half, and 4-for-20 in the second half with Meyer making all four of the team’s baskets in the second half.

Meyer finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

“We’ve got to find a way to put together 32 minutes,” Longmeier said. “I told the girls I really thought we gave a winning effort. We got beat by a better team that wore us down.

“The two things we really have to improve on, we have to get rid of turnovers and we’ve got to start making shots.”

The Owls committed 21 turnovers to 13 for the Dragons.

The Owls (0-2) travel to Greenwood today for a noon JV start.
