BROWNSTOWN

C. Sidney Zabel, of Brownstown, passed away peacefully at Covered Bridge Health Campus on the morning of November 8, 2020. He was 81 years old.

Sid entered this life on July 22, 1939 in Seymour, Indiana.

He was the first born to Carl and Alice (Freeman) Zabel and the oldest brother to Tom and Jim. Sid spent his entire life in Jackson County. He graduated from Brownstown Central High School. Then he attended Valparaiso University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business in 1961. He finished his education at Indiana University with a master’s degree in educational leadership. He became a member Pi Kappa Alpha while at Valparaiso University.

Sid was united in marriage to C. Ann (Miller) Zabel at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church on July 27, 1974. This union of 46 years was blessed with two daughters, Amy and Julie.

Sid was a devoted husband, loving father, and Grandpa.

He was a life-long member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. He loved to travel, attend sporting events and play cards.

Sid started his career in education at Medora School Corporation. He then went on to teach at Vallonia Schools where he became the principal. From there he became the principal of Freetown Elementary School. He retired from the Brownstown School Corporation after 35 years of dedication to his students.

Sid leaves a legacy of love with his family. His wife Ann Zabel of Brownstown, IN; daughters: Amy Crosser and her husband Rob of New Albany, IN, and Julie Haimbach and her husband Chris of Madison, NJ; five grandchildren: Sydney and Allison Crosser, and Elle, Cora, and Carson Haimbach; brother: Jim Zabel and his wife Judy of Brownstown, IN; sister-in-law: Cathy Zabel; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Tom Zabel.

Funeral services will be private and conducted at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church on Thursday, November 12, 2020 with pastor Jeremy Yeadon officiating.

Friends are invited to attend the graveside service at Fairview Cemetery at 11:45 am following the funeral.

Masks and social distancing will be respectfully asked for the visitors at the graveside service.

Memorials may be written in Sid’s name to establish an educational scholarship through the Community Foundation of Jackson County or the donor’s choice.
