Two Seymour men have been jailed in connection with the theft of 86 items valued at more than $3,000 from a garage Wednesday on South Carter Street, police report.

Ricky Joe Stewart, 40, and Kelly Jacob Shelton, 29, both face preliminary charges of burglary, a Level 5 felony, and theft, a Level 6 felony.

Their arrests stem from an investigation that found vehicle parts; electric, air and hand tools; knives; hatchets; copper fittings; and other items had been stolen, according to a news release from Seymour Police Department Lt. C.J. Foster.

During the investigation, owners of the property retrieved video evidence showing a vehicle leaving the garage, and additional evidence was collected by police.

The investigation of the scene led police to Stewart’s residence in the 800 block of West Laurel Street, where 72 stolen items were found. Police also went to Shelton’s home in the 700 block of South Walnut Street and found 14 more stolen items.

Both men told investigators they committed the burglary and took the items, Foster said.

Shelton was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 3:07 p.m. Thursday, while Stewart was booked into the jail at 3:15 p.m. that day. Both are being held without bond pending initial court appearances.

Upon conviction, a Level 5 felony would mean a one- to six-year prison sentence with an advisory sentence of three years.

The investigation is still ongoing, Foster said.
