Fire departments receive grants

Two Jackson County fire departments and one in Jennings County have received Volunteer Fire Assistance Grants.

The awards may be used for training, installation of dry hydrants or to purchase firefighting equipment. The grants are administered through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service.

Receiving grants are Owen Township Volunteer Fire Department, $5,000 for wildland firefighting; Pershing Township Volunteer Fire Department, $2,700 for wildland firefighting; and Campbell Township Volunteer Fire Department, $2,537 for communication equipment.

The grants, which ranged from $1,000 to $5,000, were given to 76 rural and volunteer fire departments from 47 counties and totaled $320,000 for the state.
