The Center for Business and Economic Development at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus is continuing its popular Lead by Design series with “Unveiling the Bias.”

The online interactive conversation regarding the importance of diversity to economic development and how equity and inclusion are vital to achieving that goal will be a Zoom event from 8 to 9:45 a.m. Oct. 13. The event is free, but registration is required at iupuc.edu/events/lead-by-design by 5 p.m. Oct. 12.

Nicole Pence, owner of Pence Media Group, will again serve as moderator, and the facilitators include IUPUC professors Julie Goodspeed-Chadwick and Kevin Jones; Mark Stewart, president of United Way of Bartholomew County; and Marsha VanNahmen, assistant director of the Center for Learning and Teaching at IUPUC.

In addition to presentations from the facilitators, the event will include multiple opportunities for breakout conversations, in which participants will take a deeper dive into the subjects presented.

Melissa Fairbanks, the event organizer and director of the Center for Business and Economic Development, believes the move to an online event due to COVID-19 restrictions will provide an opportunity for rich discussion via Zoom breakout rooms and the use of the polling tool. More people may actually have a chance to participate.

“When we held the previous Lead by Design events at Mill Race Center, we had to turn people away due to space limitations,” Fairbanks said. “And although we look forward to bringing community members together for future events, we hope Zoom will allow us to reach even more people with this important and timely message.”

In addition to the Center for Business and Economic Development, the event is sponsored by Innovate Indiana, the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, Columbus Rotary and Viewpoint Books.
