Seymour Community School Corp. is adding eLearning days to its calendar this month and in October.

Tuesday will be the first eLearning day of the 2020-21 school year, followed by two more dates on Oct. 12 and 13.

On those days, students will not go to school but will be required to download and complete assignments online just like they did in the spring when schools closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students will log into their teacher’s Google Classroom using their school-issued Chromebook or will complete work sent home Monday by teachers.

Assistant Superintendent Lisa Ferguson said students can expect to have one to three hours of work on eLearning days depending on the grade level.

Students who do not complete and submit their work by the required deadline will be counted absent.

Teachers will have posted office hours when they are available by phone or email on eLearning days to answer questions about assignments from students or parents.

Anyone having technology-related problems can contact the SCSC Tech Help Hotline at 812-525-9203 or 812-216-0567 for Spanish-speaking assistance.

Prepackaged breakfast and lunch meals for the day can be ordered ahead of time by contacting the school. Meals will be sent home with students on Monday. Students at Margaret R. Brown and Seymour-Jackson elementary schools will receive meals automatically without registering.

Ferguson said while students work on their own at home, teachers will receive training and participate in professional development.

On Tuesday, the school corporation is partnering with Smekens Education Solutions for teacher training sessions on ways to improve remote teaching. Seymour currently has nearly 600 students who are learning remotely from home because of the pandemic.

The October eLearning dates precede the district’s fall break, which is Oct. 14 through 16, giving students a whole week out of school.

Teachers will take part in professional development sessions Oct. 12 and 13.
