A shooting on Seymour’s southeast side Tuesday night has left two residents injured but hospitalized in stable condition at a Louisville hospital, police said.

According to a post from Lt. C.J. Foster on the Seymour Police Department’s Facebook page, the department received several calls at 9:43 p.m. Tuesday stating two individuals had been shot at a home at 330 S. Vine St.

Foster said officers located two Seymour residents, a 23-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, with gunshot wounds at the scene. Police declined to release their names.

The two were treated by personnel with Jackson County Emergency Medical Services and then airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

After obtaining a search warrant signed by Jackson Superior Court II Judge Bruce MacTavish, Foster said detectives were able to find numerous bullet casings, bullets and bullet fragments as well as other items of evidence related to the incident.

One individual at the residence told police they heard a knock on the door. When the door was opened, a man wearing a hoodie and displaying a weapon opened fire with a rifle, firing 7.62×39 mm rounds through the door multiple times, police said.

Police also recovered 11 shell casings at the scene during their search, said Officer Jeremy Helmsing, the department’s public information officer.

He said the use of a rifle in a shooting like this is “kind of different,” adding typically shooters in these scenarios opt for handguns.

He said the incident remains under investigation, and police have identified several people of interest.

Helmsing said the shooter had prior contact with the victims, so they do not believe it to be a random act of violence.

Police, however, have yet to establish a motive for the shootings, Helmsing said.

Anyone with information about the case should contact the Seymour Police Department at 812-522-1234.
