Showing strength in deflecting a major challenge, Trinity Lutheran’s volleyball team, the No. 1 ranked team in Class A, fended off No. 2 Loogootee 25-12, 25-21, 25-11 on Tuesday night.

The victory improved the Cougars to 6-2 on the season.

Kennedy Hoffman powered 14 kills and Sydney Jaynes added 13 more, and they were ably supported in hitting by Stella Kleffman and Bailey Reynolds, who each made five kills.

Sharp serving by Hoffman (two aces), Ruthie Bingham and Reynolds (one ace each) helped produce the final margin, as well.

Reynolds contributed 31 assists, while Kamzi Gross worked for 21 digs, and Kleffman came through with 17 digs.

Tigers volleyball swept

Despite some solid serving, the Crothersville volleyball team was swept by South Decatur, falling 25-7, 25-11, 25-14.

Makenna Newberry was 6 for 7 on serves and Mariyah Kelshaw was 5-for-5, but the Tigers dropped to 2-7 on the season.

Kelshaw added two kills and Kennadi Lakins one.

The Tigers’ schedule is facing some disruption in part due to other teams’ issues with the COVID-19 pandemic, though some matches are in the process of being rescheduled, Athletic Director Jacob Dunn said.

A Sept. 3 meeting with Medora has been postponed, as has a Sept. 11 match with Austin.

Seymour soccer blanked

The Owls boys soccer team dropped a 3-0 game to Jeffersonville on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils edged to a 1-0 lead in the first half and then put some distance between them and Seymour in the second half, dropping the Owls’ season mark to 1-3-1.

Seymour was out-shot 16-4. The Owls junior varsity raised its record to 3-1-1 with a dominating 6-0 triumph.

Seymour’s girls were originally scheduled to play Jeffersonville on Tuesday night, as well, but that game was postponed.
