Seymour man faces child molesting charge

A Seymour man was arrested Monday afternoon and is being charged with a Class A felony for molesting a child, police report.

The charge stems from a 2006 incident involving Glenn Dale Norris, 52, according to the probable cause affidavit signed by Brownstown Police Department Detective Jac Sanders.

While the Brownstown Police Department was moving from its old office building at 200 W. Walnut St. to its new office at 116 E. Cross St., Police Chief Tom Hanner located a rape kit that was collected at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour on April 20, 2006, Sanders said.

Sanders was given the kit and asked to look into the case to ensure it had been resolved.

Sanders said he then conducted an interview with the victim, who explained to him that Norris had sexually assaulted her 14 years ago while she was staying overnight at a friend’s house.

After consulting with Jackson County Prosecutor Jeff Chalfant, who was unable to locate any record of the case, Sanders asked Hanner to search the department’s records for the original case filing. Hanner found the case had been assigned to now retired Brownstown Officer Thomas Wright on the day the kit was collected in 2006, Sanders said.

Sanders interviewed Wright, who explained he was unable to recall the full details of the case.

Sanders also spoke with someone from the Indiana Department of Child Services, who he said was unable to locate any information about the case.

After speaking with more witnesses who were named by the victim, Sanders sent the case to the county prosecutor’s office, which charged Norris with one Class A felony count of child molesting.

Norris was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 11:40 a.m. and is being held without bond.

A Class A felony carries a sentence of 20 to 50 years in prison with an advisory sentence of 30 years if convicted.
