Fifth COVID-19 death reported here

A fifth Jackson County resident has died of COVID-19, according to the Indiana State Department of Health.

That death, which occurred July 28, was reported on the Indiana COVID-19 Dashboard released at noon Thursday. It covered positive cases, deaths and tests reported to the state through 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.

At that time, there had been 562 positive cases, including six Wednesday, of the novel coronavirus reported in the county. That’s 11.2% of the 4,997 tests administered to county residents.

Across the state, six new COVID-19 deaths were reported Wednesday, bringing the total deaths to 2,811 since the first were reported March 16. The new deaths occurred between July 28 and Tuesday. There also were 1,051 new positive cases reported, bringing the statewide total to 71,015 or 8.8% of the 804,345 total tests.

At the state level, 13.7% of the 2,205 intensive care unit beds are in use by patients testing positive for COVID-19 and 2.8% of the 2,912 ventilators are being used by COVID-19 patients.
