Seymour girls open golf season

BLOOMINGTON

Phoebe Skidmore had the low round for Seymour on Monday as the Owls girls golf team competed in the first sporting event that counted on the local high school sports calendar since last March.

Skidmore’s total was 100 at Bloomington Country Club as part of the 20-team Bloomington South Invitational.

She was one of four sophomores competing in an event that incorporated social distancing as schools were conscious of following guidelines to combat the spread of COVID-19.

“We’re pretty young,” Seymour coach Jim Hoffman said. “It was good to play. It was a long day.”

The crowded field for the 18-hole match made for hours of competition on a day when the weather forecast was threatening. Rain held off until almost immediately after the completion of the tournament, though.

“The weather was fine until we finished,” Hoffman said. “When we got done, it started pouring.”

The course was a little bit wet because of recent rain, he said, but played well.

The other Seymour scorers were Lainey Jackson (108), Liza Stuckwisch (111) and Rylee Ebler (125).

Evansville North posted the low team score of 286, one stroke better than Carmel. Seymour’s total was 444.

“They had some really good teams,” Hoffman said.

Seymour hosts an eight-team invitational Wednesday, starting at 9 a.m. at Shadowood Golf Course, the school’s first home sporting event since March.

All high school sports in Indiana were shut down for the spring, and golf is the first fall sport underway now with football, cross-country, volleyball, tennis and soccer due to begin before the end of August.

Low individual rounds on the day were scored by Faith Johnson of Evansville North and Katie Kuc of Carmel, both with 68s.
