Coach Kirk Manns asked a lot from senior Eric McCoy as a member of the Seymour Owls basketball team last winter.

“He was asked to do many things for this team,” Manns said. “He was asked to score, handle the ball and defend. His motor never stops.”

McCoy topped the Owls in scoring with an average of 13 points per game and had a high game of 30 against Madison. He scored 24 against Brownstown Central and 21 against Silver Creek.

He led Seymour in free throws attempted (65) and made (48) and percentage (73.8). He also topped the team in steals (34) and minutes played (714).

For all of his hard work, McCoy was chosen by members of the team as most valuable player for the 2019-20 season. He also was named to the all-Hoosier Hills Conference first team, as he averaged 14 points in HHC games.

McCoy’s honor and other special award winners recently were announced by Manns.

“Eric was extremely durable, playing nearly every minute of the season,” Manns said. “He will be sorely missed.”

Casey Regruth received the scholar-athlete award and was named defensive player of the year.

Marcus Brooks received the chairman of the board award for leading the Owls in rebounds with 3.8 per game.

“Marcus is a long and athletic basketball player,” Manns said. “He guards at a very high level and plays hard. Marcus is productive offensively, particularly in the open court.”

Andrew Levine was named the most improved player, and Colin Madden received the unsung player award.

McCoy, Brooks and Drew Vehslage were named to The Tribune’s all-Jackson County team.

Aiden Goen was a three-year varsity letterman, Madden, McCoy, Jayden Brown and Montana Suits received their second varsity letters and Brooks, Regruth, Vehslage and Landon Fritsch received their first varsity letters.

Brown, Goen, Madden, McCoy and Suits all graduated from the program.

Manns, in his first season as the Owls’ head coach last winter, guided the team to a record of 8-16, including a 3-4 mark in the HHC. The Owls lost three games in overtime. After losing at New Albany in overtime, the Owls won four of their next six games.
