Camping Indiana to have ‘give back’ weekend

Members of Camping Indiana, a Facebook group, are participating in a Give Back Weekend for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources July 10 through 12.

Members will be picking up trash at various state parks, fish and wildlife areas and state forest properties. The group has around 15,000 members.

Earl Reagan, the group’s founder, said he started the group in 2011 to share information on parks and help new campers.

“We have a diverse group, from campers who prefer primitive campsites to those who use travel trailers and motorhomes,” Reagan said. “Our common bond is a love of the outdoors."

Jody Heaston, volunteer coordinator for state parks, said the help is needed because there has been an increase in the number of visitors at all DNR properties this summer.

“Having members of Camping Indiana focus their efforts across the state over a weekend will make a positive impact in keeping the DNR properties clean,” Heaston said. “It’s a great way to give back.”
