On Friday night, a Crothersville man was airlifted to a nearby medical facility after accidentally shooting himself in the face.

Ryan Smith, 32, is currently in stable condition at the University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

According to a media release from Jackson County Sheriff Rick Meyer, county officers responded to a call in the 400 block of South Kovener Street in Crothersville, which reported that a man had accidentally shot himself.

Meyer said the man, who was later identified as Smith, had removed the magazine from his .25 caliber semi-auto handgun and held it up to his face in an attempt to prove that it was not loaded, however there was still a round in the chamber.

Smith was first treated by Jackson County Emergency Services before he was airlifted.

Jackson County detectives were called to the scene to investigate the incident.

Members of the Crothersville Police Department and the Vernon Township Fire Department also assisted in the response.
