Racism has to end: Is this the best the Tribune can do?

To the editor:

In my opinion the editorial cartoon published in the Tribune on Thursday, June 4, was racist and another example of well-worn negative depictions of black people in the media. The cartoon, depicting four individuals (three black and one white) looting and encouraging property destruction, was published on the same day that memorial services were conducted in Minneapolis for George Floyd, an unarmed black man murdered by police. The cartoon ignored the importance of thousands of peaceful demonstrators across the country who are acting to demand justice for all and for Mr. Floyd in particular. The cartoon instead highlighted a small group of looters and arsonists who used the large peaceful demonstrations as cover for their actions. Is this the best the Tribune can do?

Ironically, the editorial cartoon in the Tribune was on the same page as Vauxx Booker’s excellent opinion piece discrediting Representative Jim Lucas’ continued denial that he did anything wrong in publishing what was, in my opinion, a racist meme. Mr. Booker wrote “When someone does something harmful or offensive to another person, the offender’s intent is not what’s most important. The harm the actions caused to others is of greater importance.” We all should remember to practice empathy: Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes.

I join with Mr. Booker and others to say enough is enough. We must work together to end systemic racism. Two local steps are for the Tribune to use discretion in choosing editorial content and for District 69 voters to vote Mr. Lucas out of office.
