Police arrest man for stolen firearm, drugs

A 64-year-old Scott County man was arrested Sunday after police learned he was in possession of a stolen firearm, methamphetamine and marijuana.

Edward L. Turner of Scottsburg faces preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of methamphetamine, possession of paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, carrying a handgun without a permit with a prior conviction and theft, according to a news release from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.

Officer Zach Elliott said he was patrolling near State Road 11 and Interstate 65 near Seymour when he noticed a vehicle swerving from side to side and an equipment violation.

During a traffic stop on the northbound ramp to Interstate 65, Elliott was able to identify the driver as Turner.

Elliott said he smelled marijuana in the vehicle, so he conducted a search, during which he found the marijuana, methamphetamine, paraphernalia and a handgun.

After the handgun came back as stolen out of Washington County and he failed a field sobriety test, Turner was arrested and taken to the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown.

He was booked in at 2:22 a.m. Sunday and is being held without bond.
