Seymour swim coach Dave Boggs said he let members of his boys team choose what events they wanted to swim during Monday’s final home meet against Providence and Trinity Lutheran.

The Owls made good choices winning everything except the 200-yard individual medley to win the tri-meet with ease.

The Owls piled up 129 points, Providence tallied 27 and Jackson County rival Trinity Lutheran netted just three.

“They pretty much signed up where they wanted to swim tonight,” Boggs said. “We even swam off tonight and we had one big surprise.”

That surprise was Clayton Greenawalt, who won the 500 freestyle in 5 minutes and 40.49 seconds.

Greenawalt’s performance might mean a change is in store with the sectional meet right around the corner.

“I’m going to talk to him here in a moment and see what he wants to do about that,” Boggs said.

Greenawalt also won the 50 freestyle in 25.25 seconds, and he teamed up with Ethan Dippold, Grant Smith and Carter Hendrix top win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:48.15.

Senior Harrison Cottrill also had a big night winning the 200 freestyle in 2:06.75 and placing first in the 100 backstroke in 1:06.52.

He and joined Trevor Layne, Jack Land and Andrew Drake to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:57.44.

The unit of Paul Montgomery, Blake Stark, Isaac Schafer and Bryce Miller teamed up to win the opening event, the 200 medley relay, in 2:01.36.

Smith won the 100 freestyle in 59.52, Layne won the 100 butterfly in 1:04.44, Shafer won the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.29, and Kaleb Brown scored a personal record in diving, winning with 150.95 points.

Trinity Lutheran had only one swimmer compete, Nick Tucker, who placed sixth in the 50 freestyle in 35.17.

Boggs said both the Seymour boys and girls teams finished with record of 13-4.

He complimented the girls for their outstanding performance in the Floyd Central sectional that was completed Saturday.

“The girls were absolutely fantastic,” he said. ““On Saturday, 21 of the 24 were lifetime bests.

“We were three swims away from being perfect,” he continued. “It was a very good meet for us.”

The boys are well into their tapers preparing for the Floyd Central sectional preliminary heats on Feb. 20.

“The boys are where they need to be,” Boggs said, “they just need to fine tune, and make sure everything is polished and ‘game ready’ for sectional prelims.”
