Layne takes HHC title in 100 breaststroke

Trevor Layne continues to show off his skill in the pool.

The Seymour senior clinched the Hoosier Hills Conference title in the 100-yard breaststroke on Saturday at Bedford North Lawrence High School with a time of 1:00.43.

That mark was more than two seconds faster than the second-place finisher from Madison.

Not only was it a conference-winning time for Layne, but it was a second-and-a-half faster than his entry time of 1:01.98.

It was the lone conference win for the Owls, who finished fifth overall in the team race with 121.5 points.

Floyd Central won the meet with 380 points. Following them were: Bedford North Lawrence (274), Madison (147.5) and Jeffersonville (130). Rounding out the team scores: New Albany (112) took sixth, Columbus East (107) was seventh and Jennings County (36) was eighth.

Layne also finished seventh in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.10 seconds.

In the relays: the Owls took fifth in the 200 medley, sixth in the 200 freestyle and fifth in the 400 freestyle.

Bryce Miller had a couple of top-eight times in freestyle events. He took sixth in the 200 with a mark of 1:56.32 and was eighth in the 100 at 51.98 seconds.

Blake Stark took eighth in the butterfly with a time of 1:04.21 to round out the top-eight finishes for Seymour.

The boys’ team will be back in action tonight against Providence at home at 6 p.m. for one final tuneup before they focus their attention on the sectional. The girls’ team will travel to Floyd Central High School on Thursday for sectional prelims at 6 p.m.
