This year’s Seymour swimming senior class might be one of the smaller ones in recent years.
With just six seniors — three boys and three girls — many varsity spots are occupied by underclassmen.

They did just that Tuesday night against Hoosier Hills Conference rival Bedford North Lawrence but split the swim show with the Stars. The girls took home the meet win 119-61, while the boys fell 112-73.
One of their seniors, Trevor Layne, was one of several Owls to net a victory against the Stars.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Layne breezed by the competition with a time of 1 minute, 1.98 seconds, knocking off nearly a half of a second off of his seed time. The breaststroke appears to be his strongest event, and Boggs expects him to compete for the top spot in the sectional later this season, but there are still some things he needs to clean up.
“His stroke is pretty good right now, but we’ve just got to work on the details going forward,” Boggs said of Layne. “I’d like to see his start be a little bit better, and his pullout recoveries need to be better right now. They’re looking good now but not where we need them to be for four weeks from now.”
His victory was the only one on the boys’ side.
Layne also finished second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.75 and helped two relay teams to runner-up finishes. He anchored the 400 freestyle team of Grant Smith, Aiden Jent and Jack Land to a time of 3:58.97. He swam the second leg of the 200 medley relay to help the team of Paul Montgomery, Blake Stark and Smith to a time of 1:58.91.
On the girls’ side, the Owls dominated the relays, taking two of the three events for big meet points.
The team of Katya Cox, Abby Boyt, Maren McClure and Sandy Cerino started the meet off right with a win in the 200 medley relay in 2:03.32. Their time was nearly 10 seconds faster than the runner-up team from BNL.
Cox, McClure, Cerino and Samantha Jacobi took the top spot in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:52.09. The team of Boyt, Jacobi, Lillian Sunbury and Olivia Fish were second in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:18.33.
Even though the Owls are getting close to the sectional, Boggs said he’s still changing swimmers around looking for the best possible makeup for the relays.
“We swam off a little bit tonight. We were trying to figure out the best lineup we have for sectional,” Boggs said. “We tried a few new things tonight, and we knew from conference, we could afford to swim off a little bit tonight.”
Cerino won two freestyle events for the Owls, winning the 50 in 26.64 and the 100 in 58.29.
Amelita Vasquez won the middle distance freestyle in 2:16.10 and also took second in the 500 with a time of 6:05.23.
McClure won the 200 IM in a time of 2:25.29, and Alexandra Weaver rounded out the Seymour first-place finishes with a win in diving with 123.20 points.
The Owls have one more meet as a whole team before they split next week. They’ll travel up north for a date with another HHC foe, Columbus East, on Thursday at 6 p.m.
